Cosima Wagner Diaries

Hansen’s birthday! –––

“Lohengrin” had a tremendous success in Boston, I write across the seas in an attempt to see whether the Elsa there (Miss Albany)[1] might be won over for the part of Sieglinde.

In Lucerne, “Tannhäuser” has been performed, and the conductor writes about it enthusiastically. I have made visits. In the afternoon, I was with Baroness Aufsess, the widow of the former director of the Germanic Museum.

In the evening, we read together in Gfrörer’s book the chapter on angels and devils. R. searched through his old musical papers, he smiles at a rapturous poem he found therein.

[1] Did not sing in Bayreuth.
