Cosima Wagner Diaries

Early in the morning a visit from Archbishop Hajnald, whom I also introduce to R.; then some errands and said farewell to the loveliest friend, later to the excellent Standhartners.

Depart around 7 o’clock, at 6 o’clock in the morning arrive in Regensburg, since there is a five hour wait ahead of us, we visit the cathedral and take a carriage ride across to the Valhalla. The cathedral makes a great impression, but the Valhalla leaves a very minimal one. In Weiden, we have another two-hour stop; poor Bayreuth seems terribly neglected (perhaps even persecuted?).

Finally arrive in Bayreuth on the 16th at 4 o’clock, with a wonderful, warm welcome from our children, all looking well. Fidi has grown, and as if he understands the significance of the laurel wreaths hanging everywhere, he looks at his father seriously and thoughtfully, showing deep emotion; the others are all lovely, good, cheerful, and heartfelt, bringing a deep joy and hope. The first meal is at 5 o’clock. Early to bed. Very unpleasant domestic scenes.
