R. always sleepless or tormented by wild dreams. “At least let me have Eva,” with these words he woke up when he saw me leaving him with the children. Before he had felt himself to be an object of scorn and contempt! 

He dines with Karl Kolb and comes back quite satisfied by the peculiarity of these talented people. In the evening, a small gathering; a Dr Bovery, who strikes me as an interesting person, is introduced to me. Mr Glatz tries to sing, but he has a cold.

Carl Kolb

Son of Sophian Kolb, brother-in-law of Friedrich Feustel. As director of the Mechanical Cotton Spinning Mill in Bayreuth, he built the workers’ settlement “Auf der Burg” and set up medical care, a pension fund and a dining hall for his workers. He also founded what is now the Richard Wagner Gymnasium in Bayreuth.
